The most impressive plug-in hybrid electric car yet? 2022 Haval H6 PHEV smashes Volkswagen Tiguan R on power and MG HS +EV on driving range

Haval has unveiled a third powertrain option for the recently launched third-generation H6 mid-size SUV, with the new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) impressing with its outputs and electric-only driving range.

Like the ‘self-charging’ Hybrid, the PHEV features a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, although its electric motor is more potent, delivering combined outputs of 240kW of power and 530Nm of torque.

While its maximum torque is the same as the Hybrid, the PHEV’s peak power is a considerable 61kW higher, at 240kW, making it harder-hitting than the performance-focused Volkswagen Tiguan R (235kW).

Of note, the PHEV is only front-wheel drive alongside the Hybrid, with outputs sent via Haval’s Direct Hybrid Transmission (DHT), which is an electrified dual-clutch automatic item.

But the big news is the PHEV’s claimed electric-only driving range of 201km. Yep, there is a strong chance that’s the longest of any series-parallel plug-in hybrid powertrain yet, besting the rivalling MG HS +EV (63km). It’s also better than some all-electric vehicles (EVs).

Now, it’s unclear which standard the PHEV’s electric-only driving range was measured against, but even if it was the more generous NEDC combined-cycle test, it should still well and truly exceed 100km in the real world.

What’s also unknown is the size of the PHEV’s battery, as it would likely need to be unusually large for such a claim to be issued. One possibility is the 41.8kWh unit from Haval sister brand Wey’s new Coffee 01 mid-size SUV.

Speaking to CarsGuide, Haval said it has “no firm plans” to add the PHEV to Australia’s H6 line-up in. As reported, the Hybrid will be added to the local mix early next year.
