MG Motor India retail sales grow 43% to 40,273 units in 2021

New Delhi: MG Motor India on Saturday said it retailed 40,273 units in 2021, registering a growth of 43% over 2020 when the company sold 28,162 units.

Compared to 2020, the company exhibited growth of 21.5% for Hector, 145% for ZS EV, and 252% for Gloster in 2021.

“MG Motor has witnessed a jump in sales of respective car lines and garnered an overwhelming response for the recently launched MG Astor,” the carmaker said.

Rajeev Chaba, president and managing Director, MG Motor India, said, “The year 2021 was challenging for the entire auto industry. We foresee the situation will remain fluidic due to unpredictable factors – Omicron threat, global semiconductor shortage, and inflation risk due to an increase in material cost. However, resilient demand trends give us a reason to assume cautious optimism.”

“The uncertainty may continue for the first 6 months of 2022 and will persist in some form throughout the year. MG Motor will constantly be monitoring these factors and aligning its operations to meet the demand,” he said.

The company said it has closed 2021 with a significant order backlog and is trying to meet the growing demand.

Chaba noted that the company is committed to meet the high demand from its customers and investing to enhance the plant capacity to reduce the waiting time further.

The auto sector looks at 2022 with optimism despite several challenges faced by it in the form of chip shortage, Omicron, the price increase of input materials. However, the OEMs will continue to invest in new product development, with significant investments towards new technologies, such as electric vehicles (EVs).
